Environmental Commitments: The House of Dempo

Our philosophy of aiming for a sustainable balance between business development and environment protection, and to exceed global good practice, marked us out as responsible miners in the region.

Among our environmental practices were measures to control run-off, testing for infiltration and stability on mining formations and reject dumps, plantation on degraded lands over 200 hectares in area containing over 2 million saplings, resistivity surveys of ground water and geo-radar studies, 80% water reuse, and continuous environmental parameter monitoring. Our environmental management solutions included the sinking of Mulgaon Lake near Bicholim to ensure clean year-round water supply to Mulgaon farmers.

Reporting to Society

The Dempo mining operations gave rise early on to close and abiding relationships with stakeholders, especially employees and local communities. Labour unrest was unknown, as was any community opposition. The Dempo record of corporate social responsibility was fully documented in our first report to society, "The Responsible Mining Way - The Dempo Corporate Sustainability Report 2007/2008". Oriented to the GRI G3 Reporting Framework and externally verified by Det Norske Veritas AS at B+ Level, the report is testimony to the Dempo ideal of corporate citizenship.
