Independence Day was celebrated by D.C.T’s Vasantrao Dempo Higher Secondary School of Arts, Science and Commerce, Cujira. The National Flag was unfurled by the Chief Guest, Retd. Professor and eminent Chartered Accountant, Mr Narcinvha Gaunekar in the presence of the guests of honour, Dr. Mrs Lakshmi Gaunekar, paediatrician and Mrs Kumud Sardessai, social worker and the Principal, Mrs Rupa Khope.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest called upon students to work hard reminding them that there is no substitute to hard work. He called upon them to work hard and make a name for themselves in society.

The Guest of honour, Dr Gaunekar called upon students to study on a regular basis and not at the end of the year. She advised students not to be stressed out and also to make use of mobiles only for educative purposes and not for entertainment.

Earlier, Principal Mrs Rupa Khope welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest and the guests of honour. Real patriotism is seen only among the social workers and the armed forces, for them country comes first before family, she said.The Principal said that we should embrace the culture of our country. She called upon the students to respect their parents and teachers.

A student, Miss Gauri Nerurkar spoke on the occasion. Students presented a Konkani skit put together by senior teacher, Mrs Sumedha Kamat Desai. This was followed by a cultural programme based on patriotism.

The Vote of thanks was proposed by the teacher in charge of the Students’ Council, Mrs Maya Sardessai. The function was compered by a student, Miss Akanksha Potdar.
