Budding calligraphers, art enthusiasts and students of both business and the arts gathered at Dempo House on Sunday, September 28, for a captivating masterclass hosted by renowned calligrapher Sanjana Chatlani. The session, ‘The Business of Calligraphy’, organised by The Navhind Times under the banner of Talk from the Heart, offered an inspiring and instructive glimpse in to the world of art and entrepreneurship.
The session opened with a short interview with Chatlani, who is the founder of The Bombay Lettering Company and whose impressive client list includes celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, as well as global luxury brands such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo and more. She shared her journey from working with high-profile corporate clients and leaving a lucrative job to pursue calligraphy as a full-time profession, thereby highlighting its potential as a viable and fulfilling career path. “Calligraphy is more than just aesthetics,” she shared. “It’s about discipline, perseverance, storytelling, passion and creating meaningful connections through your work.” Chatlani who has trained with master calligraphers like Barbara Calzolari also highlighted the importance of finding good teachers.
The demonstration that followed, offered participants an opportunity to explore the beauty of Copperplate. From graceful upstrokes to expressive flourishes, Chatlani kept the audience engaged throughout. She emphasized the importance of rhythm, consistency and personal expression. One key tip she shared was to inhale when executing thin upstrokes and exhale on thick down strokes. In addition she also highlighted the verticals that could be explored in this realm. This gave all present a renewed sense of purpose and possibility in pursuing creative careers.
