As part of CSR initiative, Dempo Group of Companies’ chairman Shrinivas Dempo recently gave away a cheque of Rs 3,79,438 as the first instalment for the purchase of garbage collecting vehicle to the village panchayat of Santa-Cruz. The total cost of the vehicle is Rs 11,80,000.
The vehicle will be used by the garbage management group of Santa-Cruz to collect garbage and drop it off at Saligao waste management plant on a daily basis. The village panchayat of Santa-Cruz had started this initiative on October 2 to eliminate garbage. Santa-Cruz comprising of 11 wards has employed about 22 women to collect door-to-door garbage everyday, 7 am onwards.
The gram sabha of Santa-Cruz had approved a garbage tax of Rs 2 on daily basis, Rs 60 for a month and Rs 700 as yearly tax. Sarpanch of Santa-Cruz Mariano de Araujo said that in order to resolve the garbage problem, 90 per cent help of the people is required.
