The Navhind Times organized Goa’s first Qigong workshop on July 27 at Dempo House, Panaji which was covered by the Goa 365 channel. A Chinese health practice based on gentle movements, meditation and breathing with wide-ranging benefits, Qigong is said to improve balance, lower blood pressure and even ease depression. A Harvard Medical School research further suggests that this 2500-year old practice even supports healthy aging.
The resource person for the workshop was Shi Yan Xiang, 34th generation Shaolin Temple Warrior, a direct disciple of Shi Yongxin, the venerable abbot of the Shaolin Monastery in Henan Province, China. Founder of the Damo Shaolin Kung Fu School – Delhi, Shifu whose name is Rajesh Kumar, shared his story with the audience how Qigong helped him heal after a life-threatening accident and restore his health. Elucidating the connection between Shaolin Kung Fu and Qigong, he said, “Qigong Is an integral part of Shaolin Kung Fu. If kung fu is the sword then the sharpness of the blade is Qi Gong.”
Participants were taught the six sound Qigong practice which focused on six key sounds, each with its own unique healing properties. The significance of breath in maintaining good health was emphasised in the practice which encouraged delicate, refined, gentle, and subtle breathing, with specific techniques for exhaling and inhaling to benefit different sensory organs.
“Expelling the breath controls the heart, blowing controls the kidneys, exhaling controls the spleen, resting controls the lungs, hushing controls the liver, and giggling controls the Triple warmer,” explained Shifu.
